I’m useless at fighting games. God awful. And I’ve tried. I really have. But there are just so many combos to remember, and I’m the kind of guy that struggles when my bank asks me to verify my date of birth.
That’s not to say I don’t enjoy them. Button mashing against a player as shite as you are whilst drinking beer can make for a great night in, providing you don’t end up forgoing the arcade sticks for a more physical approach, resulting in one of you spending the night in A&E whilst the other one tries to scrape together his bail money.
But that’s another story.
There are so many options out there now for fighting game lovers, but I think it’s fair to say that we can hold Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior very close to, if not at the top of that list. It was the game that brought fighting games to the masses, inspired other developers to do the same, and was a huge player in the arcade game renaissance of the 90’s.
We’ve seen some great additions to the World Video Game Hall of Fame since its creation in 2015, and it makes all the sense in the world that Capcom’s hit takes its rightful place next to Super Mario Bros, Tetris and all its other retro chums. Check out the full list up to date below.
We raise a glass to you, Ryu, Ken, Blanca, Guile and all you other hard son’ bitches that have been battling it out for the last 25 years.
Don’t bully Luigi up there. He’s sensitive.
