Run. Turn back now. If you feel remotely frustrated over the little things in life, get the hell out, because by the time you’re done playing your first couple of hours with Bennett Foddy, it won’t seem like a little thing anymore, but an impossible metaphorical mountain representing every obstacle standing in front of you in life, and when I say that it’s about as difficult to beat as anything that exists in the Game-O-Sphere, I want you to understand my full meaning. ANYTHING.
Not forgetting that the man that brings us Getting Over It is the same one that brought us QWOP – Another infuriating game in which you controlled a rag doll 100 metre sprinter using only the four keys, Q,W,O and P to control individual parts of each leg. Right!? And he’s definitely turned up the difficulty hose this time around.
Still with me? Great! Now watch our video review! It’s easier!
Aside from being downright rudely punishing, it also happens to be one of the best games I’ve played this year. Its absolute simplicity, counter intuitive, yet wonderful flailing arm control scheme, and superb narrative dialogue; both comical, sarcastic and at times oddly philosophical make this a game that’s an absolute joy to play. You get out of it what you put in. With horrific loss comes the occasional big win, and they’re so sweet, man. Reaching that new height. Catching a glimpse of that new undiscovered area (albeit often to have it grimly snatched from you within moments). God, it’s just so good.

The music’s superb; both the laid back lounge jazz that accompanies Bennett during his monologues, as well as the myriad of licensed tracks that play throughout the game every now and then when you fall from an unfathomable height and feel like crying into your socks.
I mean, I’m never getting over it. I don’t have the resolve or the patience for this mountain, but I’ve tried my best. However, I’ve seen guys speedrun this game already, and that boggles my mind. It’s a reminder of the amazing things humans can do if they set their minds to it. Regardless of whether or not you’re able to finish this game, I can’t recommend strongly enough that you try it out. You never know, you might learn a little something about yourself…
Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy is available now on Steam for £5.79.
